Louis was born in Lodi, California and moved with his parents to San Diego at six months of age. Louis began accordion lessons at age 7 with Charles Bertolino. He continued until age 15 when Bertolino told Louis he could not teach him anything else and recommended Louis to Anthony Galla-Rini. Fortunately, Galla-Rini was residing 30 miles north of San Diego and Louis continued his accordion studies with him. Under maestro Galla-Rini, Louis studied classical and free bass accordion with the world's greatest accordion teacher. Immediately Louis won prince and king categories for 16 and 17 year olds at the AFNA competitions in Los Angeles in 1978 and 1979. Meanwhile, Louis began his professional career at age fifteen performing every Sunday in La Jolla and at age eighteen every Saturday in Del Mar with a polka band. Louis continued his studies with Galla-Rini for eight years while simultaneously attending Palomar college and San Diego State University through 1985. In 1984, Louis won the national accordion virtuoso competition in Denver, Colorado and premiered Galla-Rini's Sonata in D minor for Accordion at San Diego State University. Following Galla-Rini's classical instruction and receiving a Bachelor of Music degree, Louis moved to Los Angeles for three years to teach accordion at the Yoel Dan School of Music. While in Los Angeles, Louis studied jazz accordion with Frank Marocco and during this time, in 1986, Louis purchased his ultimate baby! (A petosa AM-1100.) It remains his main "axe". In 1988 Louis moved back to San Diego and has become San Diego's most respected, requested and recorded accordionist. Through further study with Donald Balistrieri and influenced by Astor Piazzolla and Flaco Jimenez, Louis has expanded his repertoire to command numerous genres compatible with the accordion, including Cajun, Tex-Mex, Tango Nuevo, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Klezmer and numerous ethnic styles. In addition, Louis does vocals in English and Italian. Louis' versatility has opened opportunities in motion pictures, television and radio. He has shared venues and performed with the following artists: Luciano Pavarotti, Bette Midler, The Gypsy Kings, Anthony Galla-Rini, Myron Floren, Frank Yankovic, Billy Barty, Bob Geldof, Queen Ida, The Beat Farmers, The St. Louis Symphony, The American Ballet, The San Diego Chamber Orchestra And Starlight Opera Company. Currently Louis performs and records around Southern California and the U.S. using his petosa AM-1100 and S-2000 MIDI-1100 accordions. |
